Will truck platooning change the game?
The transportation industry has great expectations vis a vis automated trucks. However, the introduction of the first generation vehicles is still a long way ahead and the large-scale deployment even further away.
In the meantime, engineers have been working on semi-autonomous technologies which have the potential to impact transport operators much sooner. One of the most promising innovations lies in the truck platooning. Several pilot projects have taken place over the past few years and its deployment on European highways could start as early as 2022. There are still technological and regulatory challenges to be addressed mainly due to safety systems.
What does offer truck platooning from a safety and business perspective? What are the limits of the technology? How will it be deployed? What will trucks coexist with cars?
What will be the cost? How will trucks “talk” to each other? How will drivers interact with the vehicle and computer during the driving time? Will they still be in control?
